A Boston University College of Fine Arts alumnus debuted a Boston transit-themed art installation called “Woven City” in Allston Thursday night. Alexander Golob, who graduated from CFA in 2016, was born in Cambridge and has created public art in the greater Boston area for over a decade. He said “Woven City” took inspiration from Boston’s transportation infrastructure.

The Friends group is looking to create public art that is fresh, exciting and colorful and maybe even a bit abstract to spark the imagination, said artist Alexander Golob, who responded to a call for artists and was chosen by the Friends. Golob came up with the theme, “The Stories We Carry.”

“For me, it’s important to find as many ways as possible to bring art to where people live, rather than ask them to attend a gallery," Golob said. “When you create little bits of public art, it becomes part of the environment and a celebration of human expression."

During a recent event to show off the new art work, Kat Everett of POSE Inc., a community organization in the Mount Washington neighborhood, called the mural a "beautiful project that celebrates the diversity of Haverhill."

"I was inspired by how University Station is a nexus of travel," says Golob. "[University Station] is a crossroads for train and car travel, and has added commercial and residential spaces in recent years. I wanted to show what University Station has come to represent."

“This is Haverhill,” Mayor James Fiorentini said of the artwork. “This mural tells the real history of Haverhill, which was built by immigrants.”

No, that’s not a large stained glass window behind Linden Square.

The colorful, geometric design tucked away between the Bank of America and the California Pizza Kitchen is actually the latest installation from artist and Wellesley resident Alexander Golob.

“We wanted to make something with stories that people will gain something from seeing, or that people will find connection with,” Golob said. “The goal is that people [will] be moved or provoked or changed for the better.”
