Blossoms, Beltway, and Beyond

Public art meets public infrastructure.

This mural transforms 1,000 linear feet (3,000 square feet ) of concrete barriers along a fast-deployed shared walking and biking path connecting Washington D.C.’s Tidal Basin to The Wharf, just in time for cherry blossom season.

This playful piece was created in collaboration with the Southwest Business Improvement District (SW BID) and the D.C. Department of Transportation.

The mural features a dreamy stretch of pink cloudscapes covered in cherry blossom stencils, with whimsical scenes peeking through the skies:

  • 🚀 Rockets adorned with the DC flag

  • 👨‍🚀 Friendly astronauts waving hello

  • 🪐 Ringed planets drifting through space

  • 🦀 Comet-like soft-shell crabs zipping across the stars.

Blossoms, Beltway, and Beyond is about celebration—of DC’s iconic springtime beauty, of creative possibility, and of our shared public spaces. It’s a little bit cosmic, a little bit local, and totally joyful.

Public art in infrastructure draws people in, inspires movement, and boosts foot traffic to local businesses and cultural destinations - it signals care in overlooked spaces.

Why This Matters: Art Meets Access, Safety, and Vibrancy

Blossoms, Beltway, and Beyond is more than a mural—it's part of a larger vision to create safer, more inviting public spaces and pathways. By transforming uninviting concrete barriers into a joyful visual journey, the mural encourages increased use of the shared path, improving both visibility and safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Even in the time that I was creating this mural, use of the pathway dramatically increased once the mural was painted.

Public art in infrastructure like this can help draw people in, inspire movement, and even boost foot traffic to local businesses and cultural destinations. It signals care, energy, and possibility in a space that might otherwise be overlooked.

When art and infrastructure come together, they create not just safer streets—but more beloved and better-used ones. These paths encourage engagement and create memorable experiences.
